With 490 runners, and hundreds more on hand in support, the Second Annual Suncoast Credit Union Foundation Schoolhouse Hustle at Crest School in Lecanto was a heart-warming success. The event included a 10k and 5k race, as well as a 1 mile fun run. The races included runners from ages 1 to 84.
Proceeds benefited the Citrus County Education Foundation (“CCEF”), a 501(c)(3) dedicated to supporting prekindergarten through twelfth grade educational programs in Citrus County. The event raised an estimated $13,000 which will be used to help fund innovative classroom programs, mentoring programs, and early literacy initiatives. The race was part of the CCEF’s Educational Fitness month, and will be followed by the 17th Annual Superintendent’s Golf Classic taking place on Saturday, April 18th at Sugarmill Woods Golf and Country Club.
The Schoolhouse Hustle also included a free health expo and a YMCA Kid’s Zone. Attendees had the opportunity to meet with many local health groups, learning coalitions, and local businesses. The title sponsor for the event was the Suncoast Credit Union Foundation, who also sponsored the event in 2014. The Vaughn/McLaughlin Group of Raymond James in Crystal River was this year’s finish line sponsor. Inverness Yoga & Wellness Center, Crystal Automotive Group, and Citrus 95/The Fox provided the water station sponsorships and Subway provided the bib sponsorship.
Prizes were also on the line for the schools with the greatest participation and for individuals and groups showing the most school spirit. The winners of the IM&P Wellness Center’s Spirit Sticks award were the Menster family (group) and Frank Vilardi (individual). Mr. Vilardi not only ran the entire 5k race in a Hawk outfit supporting Citrus Springs Elementary School, but he placed first in his age division! The $1,000 prizes for the top schools went to Forest Ridge Elementary and Central Ridge Elementary. The school participation prizes were sponsored by the Citrus County Chronicle.
The race was operated by DRC Sports, Inc. Individuals taking the top times overall and in their age category received prizes sponsored by Nature Coast Financial Advisors. A full list of winners can be found at drcsports.com.
